Link Building Using Forums

This is a technique i have just started using, to promote an affiliate site. I am trying to generate links and also traffice to the site with little or no expense. As we all know this is now virtually impossible.
Using an affiliate site started from scratch i have joined a few closely related (to my site)forums and added my new affiliate site url as my user name and signature. I have posted as many times as possible.
The main problem i have is that i am NOT an Expert on the subject. I think this is a problem for most affiliate webmasters. I have found the most if not all forums ,have a ‘Humour’ Or General Chat section.
The Humour or Chat section is the one i use most. You need know nothing about the subject but you can post on the forum a joke, comment about something on tv etc. I personally recieve numerous jokes through emails every day from friends i tend to post these especially the ones in the current news.
I have recently tried this using just 5 forums and within 16 days i had 9 links appear on google. It obviously also generates traffic from the forum also. And the great parts of it , is that it take very little work.
What are your experiences??
